What are the options for importing STEP files into SketchUp?
There are several ways to import STEP files into SketchUp. But what are the available options, and which one is right for you?
Below, we've listed three popular solutions:
- Universal Importer by SketchUcation
- STEP File Importer by SimLab
- Rhinoceros 3Dby McNeel
1. Universal Importer
Universal Importer is a popular, free, open-source plugin available through the SketchUcation PluginStore. This extension allows you to import dozens of 3D file formats into SketchUp that are not supported by default.
Supports more than 60 file formats Import formats: such as STEP, IGES, BREP, glTF/GLB, FBX, OBJ, PLY, OFF, STL, and older BLEND files directly into SketchUp.
Built-in polygon reduction: Reduce high polygon counts during or after import to prevent SketchUp from becoming slow or unresponsive. Keep in mind that importing very large files (for example 500 MB or more) and heavily reducing them often leads to poor results.
Unit and scale management: Specify the source model's units (millimeters, centimeters, inches, etc.) before importing to ensure the model is imported at the correct scale.
Texture and coordinate correction: Automatically manages texture coordinates and embedded textures on imported models, helping materials and UV mapping remain correctly aligned.
Common Issues & Tips
Import fails immediately: Make sure the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (x64) is installed on your computer.
Missing textures:Use Extensions → Universal Importer → Claim Missing Textures before importing the file again.
Scale issues: If the imported model is too large or too small, verify the original file's unit settings in the source CAD software and explicitly select the correct units during import.
Cleanup: after importing, the file is unstructured and triangulated. Use for example CleanUp³ to clean up triangulation and manually add structure to the file again by selecting and grouping elements.
2. STEP File Importer by SimLab
The SimLab STEP Importer for SketchUp is a commercial extension specifically designed to import .stp and .step CAD files directly into SketchUp. Unlike the free Universal Importer, this is a professional solution focused on accurate CAD conversion.
Preserves CAD structure: Accurately converts NURBS geometry into SketchUp polygons while maintaining the assembly hierarchy, including groups and individual components.
Materials and colors: Supports both AP203 and AP214 STEP specifications while preserving colors and materials assigned in CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion 360, and CATIA.
Orientation and scale settings: Adjust the axis orientation (Up Vector), rotation, and scaling factor before importing to avoid orientation or scaling issues.
Tessellation quality: Control the density of the generated polygon mesh. Lower quality creates lighter SketchUp models, while higher quality produces smoother geometry.
Comparison
| Feature | SimLab STEP Importer | Universal Importer |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Paid (free trial available) | Free / Open-source |
| Supported formats | STEP/STP only | 60+ formats including STEP, FBX and OBJ |
| Reliability | Very stable for large CAD assemblies | Depends on open-source converters and can occasionally be less stable |
Rhinoceros 3D
If you already happen to own a Rhino license, it can be used as an excellent conversion tool. Simply import the STEP file into Rhino and export it in a SKP format. The resulting geometry in SketchUp will be comparable to the result after using the Universal Importer.
Conclusion
If you're just going to import STEP files occasionally, the Universal Importer is an excellent free solution. Or, if you happen to have Rhino, you can choose to use that.
But if you're going to import STEP files on a daily basis, we recommend buying the SimLab STEP Importer. SimLab provides greater reliability and more accurate CAD conversion for professional workflows.
