V-Ray Fails to Activate in SketchUp Studio

Modified on Tue, 24 Oct, 2023 at 1:07 PM

A  common issue V-Ray users may encounter is a failure when activating their V-Ray license in SketchUp Studio. This happens when a user previously installed V-Ray on their device using a different email than the one they use for their SketchUp subscription.

Note: You must have an active SketchUp Studio subscription or Trial to use V-Ray with SketchUp.

If you experience this error, you'll need to sign out and uninstall the Chaos license server on your device by following these steps:

  1. Open your Trimble Account Management Portal (if you need help getting there, use https://ecom-prd.trimblepaas.com/account/ ). If you have more than one account, choose the appropriate account and click  Members.
  2. Open the context menu () next to the user's name and select  Modify Product Access
  3.  In the list of products, deselect SketchUp Studio. Click Save Product Access.
  4. Wait around 5 minutes and select Modify Product Access again for that same user. Select SketchUp Studio and click Save Product Access.
  5. Open your preferred web browser and navigate to http://localhost:30304/#/  to open the Chaos License Server.
  6. Click Online Licensing at the top of the page and click Sign Out.
  7. Navigate to  https://accounts.chaosgroup.com/trimble/login  and then click Continue with Trimble and sign in using your Trimble ID.
  8. Return to SketchUp and sign out of your account.
  9. Immediately sign back into SketchUp. Your V-Ray license is now activated in SketchUp Studio!

If this doesn't solve the issue, follow these steps:

     1.   Uninstall the Chaos License Server

     2.   Open your File Explorer and navigate to Program files\Common files\ChaosGroup.

     3.   Delete the folder named "ssl".

     4.   Download the Chaos License Server from their help documentation site here.

     5.    Install the Chaos License Server. During installation choose Customize and

           uncheck "Activate during installation."

     6.   Choose Ignore for any error messages during installation.

     7.   Once installation is complete, open http://localhost:30304 in your web browser.

     8.   Sign in using your Trimble ID.

     9.   Activate online licensing with your account.
