What’s the difference between named and floating licenses when using
Cloud Licensing?
Named licenses are designed for use by specific individual users, assuring dedicated access to the
license for just that person. Named licenses are ideal for individual users or for teams where the license
can be assigned to a specific user to assure dedicated access for this user.
Floating licenses are designed to be used by teams, where a pool of licenses can be used by any user
on a first-come, first-served basis. Floating licenses do not need to be assigned to a user and are ideal
for teams with varying usage of the product.
With Cloud Licensing, both license types require users to sign in with their Chaos account to obtain a
license.
How do floating licenses get picked up for users in my organization?
With Cloud Licensing, floating licenses are held by the Organization admin account in My Chaos.
Individual users in the organization login with their own accounts, and can use the floating license pool
on a first-come, first-served basis.
If a user has a named license assigned, this license gets picked up with priority. Then, the system looks
for any floating licenses shared by the organization.
Can we cap seats per department or cost center?
Currently cloud licensing supports a single pool of floating seats.
Can I use my perpetual license with Cloud Licensing?
Cloud licensing works only on new versions of Chaos products released in 2026 and later. If you have a
perpetual license, your license grants you access only to the specific version you have purchased.
If your perpetual license is for a version of the product that supports Cloud Licensing – you will be able
to use it. If your license is for an older product version, you may not be able to use Cloud Licensing. You
can continue using your existing License Server setup - no change is required.
Do I need to install another product version when I switch to a higher or lower
subscription plan?
No. Changing your subscription from Solo to Collection or from Premium down to Solo does not require
you to re-install the product. Any change of access to features or services is handled automatically.
Are there updated EULA or Terms of Service specific to cloud licensing? Do the
license terms change if I switch to Cloud Licensing?
No, there is no change to our terms – the existing license terms remain unchanged.
Cloud Licensing is simply an additional option that aims to reduce setup complexity.
