By default, Skimp tries to preserve as much of your model details as possible. This means that various 'boundaries' affect the ability of Skimp to simplify your model.
For example, texture coordinate (UV) and hard-edge boundaries can greatly affect the simplification process. A UV boundary occurs when textures are not continuous across an edge.
In particular, models that were exported from SketchUp into other formats (3DS, FBX, DAE) sometimes have lots of unnecessary UV boundaries and this can simplification problems.
Below is an example of a model with lots of UV boundaries. The texture is not continuous across the edges of the model. This situation is very common for furniture models but may not be noticeable unless you zoom in close to the model.
Ways to increase the amount of simplification:
We recommend following these steps in order. After each step, try to import / simplify your model again and see if you are happy with the results. If so, there is no need to follow the other steps.
- Disable the 'Maintain UVs' setting
- Disable the 'Maintain Normals' setting
- Disable the 'Lock Surface Boundaries' setting
- Disable 'Use Tolerance' or
- If 'Use Tolerance' is enabled, increase the error tolerance value.
- Lastly, try increasing the threshold values for Join Vertices, Join Normals, and Join UVs
Try using the above settings if your model won't simplify.
