SketchUp says I'm offline but that's not true!

Modified on Thu, 23 May at 11:44 AM

To check if you have an internet connection, SketchUp uses a URL to test if you are online.
The default URL for this is bing.com

If Bing doesn't respond quickly enough, SketchUp will conclude that you are offline and the following features will not work:

  • login
  • log out
  • 3D Warehouse
  • Extension Warehouse
  • Insert location

However, sometimes bing.com itself is offline, or your network is not allowing traffic to bing.com.

Fortunately, you can change which URL is used to see if you have internet.

  1. Close SketchUp if you have SketchUp open
  2. [win] Go to windows explorer and type %LocalAppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 20##\SketchUp\ in the address field
    [mac] Go to Finder > Go > Go to folder and type: ~/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 20# #/SketchUp/
    in both above, replace 20## with your current SketchUp version
  3. Open the PrivatePreference.json file with Notepad or another text editor without formatting options.
    Find the string
    "OnlineTestURL" : ""
    Change this to
    "OnlineTestURL" : "https://www.sketchup.com"
    (or choose another URL that you are sure you can reach - for example, an intranet page).
  4. Save the file
  5. Start SketchUp again!
