By default, the Bevel plugin will smooth the edge between the bevel and original face (unless the bevel has only one segment). This edge is known as a 'Bevel Border'.
If you disable 'Smooth Bevel Borders' and then run the Auto-soften Edges command, all bevel borders will have their 'Smooth' property turned off resulting in discontinuous (non-smooth) shading across the border edge as shown below:
Although the shading becomes discontinuous at the border edge, the advantage of disabling smooth bevel borders is that any shading artefacts of the original faces will be removed as shown in the example below:
